Personality; River Song is an archeologist, prone to adventures with the Doctor as well as without him. Originally River got into studying archeology on the University on the Moon in the 51st century in order to see the Doctor again, the love of her life. As she is very intelligent and has vast knowledge of time and space due to being sired in the Time Vortex, often being able to be on par with the Doctor, she easily first becomes a doctor and then a professor of her field. Later in her life she is hired by Bishop Octavian to investigate why the Aplans, the planet Alfava Metraxis’ indigenous people, died out and then by Mr Lux to find out what happened at The Library, a planet consisting of the biggest library in the universe, 100 years prior. In both instances she, as she often does, asked the Doctor for his support, knowing she could use his help and he would enjoy the adventure.
As one can already see from these two events in her life, the Doctor is the biggest influence on her and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that her life revolves around him. In fact, she has told her father, Rory Williams, once that she “live[s] for the days [she] see[s] him”, which is true especially when she is imprisoned at Stormcage, an intergalaxical prison planet, for killing the Doctor. As a consequence her biggest fear also has to do with the Doctor and she admits that she is not afraid of death, neither the Doctor’s nor her own, but instead of the day when she will see him, but he will not recognize her. This does happen because of the fact that River and the Doctor meet up in roughly the opposite order from their respective perspectives, which means that the Doctor’s first time of meeting her is actually her last time, while he already has met her several times when she first meets him.
This somewhat weird scenario is owed to River, like the Doctor, being a time traveler, who uses a vortex manipulator instead of travelling alongside the Doctor in the TARDIS, which allows her to reach places on her own and thus stay independent as well as keep a couple of secrets from the Doctor, like when she visits her parents to tell them that the Doctor is not dead at the end of “The Wedding of River Song”. She clearly enjoys lying about certain things, like her identity, and keeping secrets, but it’s also true that most are impossible to avoid because if she let the Doctor know about his future that she often already has experienced it would create a paradox. To avoid this from happening she and the Doctor keep diaries of their meetings and always check where they are in each other’s time lines when they see each other. Upon these instances she always fondly recalls their adventures together, many of which the viewer never gets to see, but instead are only referred to, such as “Jim the Fish”. All of their meetings, from the very first onwards, share River and the Doctor constantly flirting with each other and quite a bit of bickering “like an old married couple”, as many other people have pointed out over the years. River also enjoys flirting with people other than the Doctor, like when she states to fancy her whole expedition group save Mr Lux – although she considers him her husband after marrying him in an alternative timeline and subsequently referring to their relationship as a marriage, which he readily agrees to, also calling her his wife.
However at the beginning of her incarnation as River Song, Melody Pond’s goal was to kill the Doctor, as she was conditioned to do by the Silence, a religious order who tries to kill the Doctor before he reaches Trenzalore and who took her from her parents at once after she was born at Demons Run. In order to fulfill that objective she used the Doctor’s obvious feelings for her, which she didn’t understand having never met him at that point, and poisoned him with a kiss laced with Judas Tree lipstick, a potent poison capable of killing a Time Lord without any chance of regenerating. It is therefore possible to say that she uses love and sexuality as weapons and as a means of distraction. (An example would be when she gets really close to the Doctor to get hold of a gun behind him.) She continues to do so later in her life as well, for instance when she uses her hallucinogenic lipstick on one of the guards at Stormcage or a Roman soldier near Stonehenge to either escape or make the latter believe she is Cleopatra.
In the early hours after her regeneration, Melody is a ruthless killer, who does not mind stealing or threatening, similarly to how her earlier incarnation Mels behaved. What astonished her then was the Doctor’s refusal to abandon his friends, her parents Amy and Rory, even while he was dying a painful death. He taught her, that there are things one mustn’t ever give up on and that there are people worth to die for, a lesson she would later abide herself. During that first meeting, Melody is much more selfish than she will be in her later life, as she tries to run to save her own life instead of trying to help her parents, whom she grew up with and clearly feels affection for. Only when told who that River Song he has been calling out for is, does she show compassion for him and immediately cancels the effect of the poison by using up all her remaining regenerations. She does so because she sees how much the Doctor loves her and how he will mean the world to her one day, too. She does however ask her mother, Amy, whether he is worth it, trusting her judgment, which also shows how important she is for her.
While helping the Doctor may be the most defining trait of the woman known as River Song, she also inherited several others from her parents. Her unconditional love and willingness to wait for the love of her life and do anything to make him happy is something she shares with her father, Rory, who also would destroy the universe for his beloved, something that River has accepted as a consequence when she refused to kill the Doctor at Lake Silencio. Her manipulation of the spacesuit’s weapons, like repairing the teleporter on the Byzantium, furthermore shows how tech savvy she is. In addition to that, her third parent, the TARDIS, gave her flying lessons, which enabled her to fly the TARDIS better and with far less turbulences than the Doctor can, an ability that River has displayed on numerous occasions. Like Amy, River is generally strong willed and cheeky, not shying away from what could be perceived as bold comments even when faces with authority figures or her temporary employer Mr Lux. Also, she always trusted the Doctor “to the end of the universe”, as she said herself, just like her mother did, which can be seen when she jumps from a skyscraper in New York, her faith in the Time Lord leaving no doubt that he would be there to catch her. And she was right as he always was there when she called.
Many of the things she would do or say in her later life were inspired by things she saw her parents do (disfiguring landscapes to call for the Doctor) or by things the Doctor – often accidentally – told her about her future self (like easily being able to escape from Stormcage or her catchphrase “Spoilers” and even her name “River Song”), all of which form a stable time loop, meaning that she could only call herself River because she had been told she had used that name in the Doctor’s past. Much like Amy, River was able to guess what the Doctor was thinking, often noticing minor changes in his facial expression or behavior, since she knew him well enough, maybe better than he sometimes knew himself. This went as far as being capable of explaining his thought processes to others.
To protect herself and others, River is often seen using various kinds of guns, which the Doctor may openly dislike, but she considers a necessity since sometimes the monster of the week cannot be talked to death and more extreme measures must be taken. While most associates of the Doctor would show mercy when begged for it, River does not forgive someone shooting at her loved ones, as a Dalek had to learn the hard way. Throughout most of her life the name River Song induces fear in many parts of the universe due to her being the woman who killed the Doctor, a reputation which she uses to her advantage, much like the Doctor tends to boast about his past battles when confronted with enemies.
As a result of her long travels and many adventures with and without the Doctor, River has grown up into an independent and strong woman, who knows exactly what she is capable of and rarely shows fear when confronted with even the deadliest of creatures. As mentioned above already she shows the most emotion when the Doctor is in danger and even perceives small sacrifices like healing her hand with a bit of regeneration energy as silly and stupid, while she goes even further to make sure the Doctor is alright. Sometimes however she throws those concerns aside to support others, like her mother, who let herself be zapped back in time to be with Rory, which River understood well and backed her up in her decision, despite how much this might hurt herself or the Doctor because she wanted Amy to be happy. It is in these little moments that we can see how she changed from a selfish person into a selfless one.

Network Sample; [The video starts showing a ruffle of clothes and hair, so much hair, whipping around a woman’s smiling face and obscuring most of her features. Except for her smile, covered in red lipstick. It seems to be showing off her excitement to be here. There is no trace of worry or confusion.
She brushes her blonde locks aside, tucking a few strands securely behind her ear, as she faces the camera. There is mischief in her green eyes and for some reason her words appear to be speaking to only one particular person.]
Hello, Sweetie. I know you can hear me and I’ll be waiting.
[Just like that, without any explanation the video ends.]
Log Sample; River song opened her eyes to a whole new world, one she had neither seen before in her life nor during what came after. While this was by no means an event out of the ordinary – visiting foreign planets and times was part of both her profession as of her travels with the Doctor – the way she had arrived in this particular city was special since it had not happened deliberately. Her early confusing quickly gave way to her natural curiosity, as she was given a rather thorough and amusing explanation by one of the local gods on her communicator. She had not expected going anywhere but back to the Library’s data core, where she had been saved by the Doctor all those years ago, after bidding him goodbye what only felt like seconds ago. His presence lingered in her mind and she could practically still feel him, see that final smile of his filled with sadness and love, just for her if she only closed her eyes. She would never forget, not one second of their time together, even without her diary. The memories were always with her. A smile appeared on her lips at the thought and River felt at peace as she breathed in deeply, taking in this whole new world, whole new life awaiting her. Dead or alive, alone or with the Doctor, Professor River Song felt excitement spark inside of her: She would make the most of her stay here, she decided. Not for some gods or anyone else, but simply because she wouldn't waste her second chance.
“Now, let’s see who else they dragged here”, she muttered, as she stepped outside and looked up to see the sun, brightly shining down on her.
